Smile! You’ve got dental insurance

As an Oregon Health Plan (OHP) member, you are covered for dental care. This is a great benefit for you and your family. Your teeth and gums are important to overall health, today and for the future.

Dental care is an important part of your family’s regular health routine. Here are some tips for oral health.

Infants and Children

Cavities are the most common childhood disease. Regular dental visits help prevent cavities.

  • Children should see a dentist as soon as their first tooth appears or by their first birthday.
  • Regular dental visits for toddlers can prevent problems with permanent teeth.

When your child’s back teeth (molars) come in, ask your dentist about dental sealants. These are thin plastic coatings that seal out germs and prevent cavities. Dental sealants are a great idea because:

  • Dental sealants can last a long time – 7 to 10 years.
  • Dental sealants can save you money on future dentist bills.

Dental sealants on permanent molars are covered by the Oregon Health Plan for children under 16.

Adults

All adults should see their dentist at least once a year and complete any necessary treatment as soon as possible. People with certain conditions need to take especially good care of their teeth and gums.

  • Pregnancy: dental care is safe while pregnant, and part of a healthy pregnancy.
  • Diabetes: regular dental visits may help control blood sugar and reduce complications.
  • Heart disease: This and other chronic conditions already stress the body. Poor oral health can complicate other chronic conditions.
  • Dentures:  Regular denture checkups can lengthen the life of your denture and keep them fitting properly. Your dentist will also check the soft tissue in your mouth for anything unusual or signs of cancer.

Outside the dentist office

Dental care is also something you do every day. Here are a few more tips to protect your family’s dental health.

  • Never put your baby to bed with a bottle.
  • Children need help brushing their teeth until they can tie their shoes.
  • Using fluoride toothpaste daily, and getting fluoride treatments, makes teeth stronger.
