Jackson County health providers integrate addiction services into primary care medical visits

MEDFORD—Efforts to address one of Jackson County’s biggest health issues, opioid addiction and treatment, rank high on the priority list for Jackson Care Connect during the first half of 2014.

Oregon ranks 47th in the nation in its ability to provide addiction treatment, and Jackson County has one of the highest opioid death rates in the state. The No. 1 prescribed drug in the county is the opioid hydrocodone.

In order to help providers intervene and screen for drug addiction earlier, Jackson Care Connect is joining all of the Jackson County CCOs in collaboration with Jackson County Mental Health, On Track and Addictions Recovery Center. Working together to integrate mental health services into primary health care services, including access to addiction care, will smooth the way for faster treatment.

With support from Jackson Care Connect, Jim Shames, MD, medical director for the county health department, leads a pilot program called the Opioid Prescriber’s Group, a group of health care professionals in Jackson and Josephine Counties. The group has been working to set opioid prescribing standards for pain management. Jackson Care Connect is sending letters explaining the new prescribing guidelines to physicians and members.

Jackson Care Connect enters social media

Wanting to utilize all practical methods for reaching out to members, providers and the community, Jackson Care Connect has launched a Facebook page.

In addition to sharing community outreach efforts and chances to interact with the JCC team, Facebook posts will focus on activities and opportunities for healthy living throughout the Jackson County community, including nutrition, physical activity, inexpensive family fun, social services and improved access to health care and healthy lifestyles.

Recent posts include a recipe for a healthy Waldorf salad, links to the schedule for the free Green Show in Ashland, and tips on recreating safely amid summer heat and threat of forest fires.

We welcome posts on these subjects and hope the page can help spur dialogue about our healthy community.
