Winter Weather Worsens- Blood Emergency!

These are all subject lines of emails sent to regular blood donor, and CareOregon employee Rich McPherson. “The Red Cross isn’t shy about begging for your blood,” he says. “I try to stay on a regular 8-week schedule, because I know my donation is like gold to them. And knowing my blood can help save someone’s life is an amazing feeling. It’s a win-win situation.”

January is National Blood Donor Month, and the reason makes sense. The winter months are especially difficult for the Red Cross. Harsh weather cancels a lot of blood drives and the rounds of seasonal illnesses leave some donors too sick to give. If you’ve ever tried to donate blood while under the weather, you’ll know that they’ll send you home faster than you can spell F-L-U.

Between the recent fires in California and sub-zero temperatures crippling the Midwest, efforts to gather blood this time of year are more important than ever. While any month is a good month to give, consider these winter months as especially crucial to the Red Cross’s mission.

CareOregon hosts several blood drives per year that are open to the public. However, the next one isn’t until May 23, 2019. Don’t wait until May. Find a blood drive near you today and give the gift of life this winter. You can sign up to donate on the Red Cross website. They collect blood every day because the need is constant.

“I love being a hero in my own special way,” says McPherson. “It’s personal, and I dig it!”
