Hidradenitis Suppurativa – benefit update for chronic skin condition

By Cory Bradley, PharmD

In anticipation of a change to make hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) a covered diagnosis under the Oregon Medicaid Prioritized List, CareOregon has expanded access to some common treatments. Topical clindamycin 1% solution will now be formulary without prior authorization. Doxycycline will have its quantity limits adjusted to allow for longer term therapy. Current limits only allow for acute courses. Almost all doxycycline formulations of 50 mg and 100 mg are covered. The only exception is doxycycline hyclate 50 mg tablets at a cost of over $10 per tablet, which will be removed from the formulary.  Don’t worry, it is a rarely used formulation, so no disruption is expected.
