OHP covers mental health services

Mental health is an important part of your overall health. If you’re an Oregon Health Plan (OHP) member, a variety of services are covered. These include mental health care, substance use treatment and recovery support.

For many of these services, you do not need to get a referral. Just call the provider to schedule an appointment.

If you need help for a mental health crisis, don’t wait. Call your county’s mental health crisis line, or call or text 988 any time, day or night.

Mental health care

Mental health services include counseling, case management, medications and much more. Often, you can get these services by phone or video call (telehealth).

Many primary care clinics also have a behavioral health clinician as part of their staff. Your primary care clinician (PCP) can connect you to this care.

Specialty mental health services are also covered. These can include talking with a mental health specialist, residential care or psychiatry. Some of these specialty services may need pre-approval.

Substance use treatment

OHP members are also covered for substance use treatment. This is sometimes called alcohol or drug treatment. Substance use treatment services include withdrawal management (also known as detox), medication, residential treatment and more. You do not need a referral to access most of these services, and you can call the provider directly. You can also talk to your PCP or your health plan’s customer service for help.

Recovery support services

Recovery support services are an important part of mental health care. OHP covers in-person care, peer recovery support and more. We work with many clinical and community groups to help support recovery.
